Bird Box is a 2018 American post-apocalyptic horror movie directed by Susanne Bier, based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name. It was written by Eric Heisserer and directed by Susanne Bier. The film follows Sandra Bullock’s character Malorie Hayes as she struggles to safeguard herself and her two children from entities that drive individuals who look at them to commit themselves.
Bird Box had its international premiere on November 12, 2018, at the AFI Fest, and went into restricted distribution on December 14, before becoming available on Netflix worldwide on December 21, 2018. Critics gave the picture a mixed response.
Universal Pictures optioned the picture rights to Bird Box in 2013 before the book was published. The picture was scheduled to be produced by Scott Stuber and Chris Morgan, with It and Mama filmmaker Andy Muschietti attached to helm. Eric Heisserer, a screenwriter, was in talks to create the script. Industrial Light & Magic provided the visual effects, which were overseen by Marcus Taormina.
