Bird Box had its international premiere on November 12, 2018, at the AFI Fest, and went into restricted distribution on December 14, before becoming available on Netflix worldwide on December 21, 2018. Critics gave the picture a mixed response.

Universal Pictures optioned the picture rights to Bird Box in 2013 before the book was published. The picture was scheduled to be produced by Scott Stuber and Chris Morgan, with It and Mama filmmaker Andy Muschietti attached to helm. Eric Heisserer, a screenwriter, was in talks to create the script. Industrial Light & Magic provided the visual effects, which were overseen by Marcus Taormina.
