Which is the highest-grossing British film of all time?

Roger Michell directed the romantic comedy film Notting Hill in 1999. Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay, while Duncan Kenworthy produced the picture. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in the picture, which also has Rhys Ifans, Emma Chambers, Tim McInnerny, Gina McKee, and Hugh Bonneville in supporting parts. The plot revolves around a romance between a London bookseller (Grant) and a well-known American actress (Roberts), who happens to come into his store.

Notting Hill, which was released on May 21, 1999, was well-received by reviewers and went on to become the highest-grossing British film of all time. The film received two BAFTA nominations and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, with Roberts and Grant receiving nods for their respective performances. The soundtrack was also nominated for a British Comedy Award and a Brit Award.
The movie was developed by Richard Curtis when he was awake at night. ‘The idea of a very ordinary person going out with an immensely renowned person and how it impacts their lives,’ he explained as the starting point.

The film debuted in the United States and Canada over Memorial Day weekend, the same weekend as Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and debuted at number two for the weekend, grossing US$27.7 million over four days, the highest opening for a romantic comedy film, beating out My Best Friend’s Wedding.
The film earned US$363,889,678 worldwide, making it the highest-grossing British picture of all time, surpassing Four Weddings and a Funeral from 1994, and the seventh highest-grossing film of 1999.
