Christopher Crosby Farley, also known as Chris Farley, was an American actor and comedian who was born on February 15, 1964. Farley was a member of Chicago’s Second City Theatre and later a cast member of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995, and was recognized for his loud, energetic comedic style. He eventually went on to star in movies such as Airheads, Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Beverly Hills Ninja, and Almost Heroes, among others.
Almost Heroes is a 1998 American adventure comedy Western movie directed by Christopher Guest and starring Chris Farley and Matthew Perry and narrated by Guest’s friend and longtime colleague Harry Shearer. Farley’s final main part was in this picture, which was released after his death in 1997.
In 1804, a foppish aristocrat named Leslie Edwards and the boisterous, low-brow Bartholomew Hunt competed against Lewis & Clark for the honor of being the first to survey and cross the United States to the Pacific Ocean. Edwards has high expectations to lead the first expedition to cross the United States at the start of the movie, but he lacks desire and finance. He was raised in a safe environment and has little knowledge of the wildness he desires to cross. He recruits the services of Hunt, a supposedly expert wilderness-man and tracker, to assist him on his adventure, but Hunt proves to be less than advertised once they’re on the road.
The picture had a $30 million budget. The producers chose realism in the visual style because they thought the story’s humor came from setting the goofy heroes against a historical backdrop. In the summer of 1996, principal photography began. Four weeks were spent filming in Northern California’s Big Bear region.
