Jonathan David Larson, an American composer, songwriter, and playwright, was born on February 4, 1960, and explores the social concerns of diversity, addiction, and homophobia in his work. His musicals Rent and Tick, Tick… Boom! are good instances of how he uses these topics. For the rock musical Rent, he garnered three Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama after his death.
Larson was born on February 4, 1960, in White Plains, New York, to Nanette and Allan Larson. He came from a Jewish household. His grandfather, a Russian immigrant, had altered his surname from Larson. Larson was introduced to the performing arts, particularly music and drama, at a young age, when he played the trumpet and tuba, sang in his school chorus, and had formal piano lessons.
Larson wrote a series of early theatrical plays, with varying degrees of success and production, before creating and writing the musical Rent, his most well-known work. Sacrimmoralinority, his first musical, which he co-wrote with David Glenn Armstrong while they were both students at Adelphi University, is one of his early works.
Larson died on the morning of January 25, 1996, the first Off-Broadway preview performance of Rent, at his home. He had an aortic dissection, which was thought to be the result of undetected Marfan syndrome.
