Bong Joon-ho is a South Korean film director, producer, and screenwriter who was born on September 14, 1969. His filmography is marked by an emphasis on social topics, genre-mixing, black humor, and abrupt tone shifts. He has won three Academy Awards.

With his directorial debut film, the black comedy Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), he established a cult following before going on to have critical and commercial success with his subsequent films, including the crime thriller Memories of Murder (2003), the monster film The Host (2006), the science fiction action film Snowpiercer (2013), and the black comedy thriller Parasite (2019), all of which are among the highest-grossing films in South Korea.

Barking Dogs Never Bite

Bong’s films have all been South Korean productions, with the exception of Snowpiercer and Okja (2017), which are primarily in English. Two of his films, Okja in 2017 and Parasite in 2019, appeared in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, with the latter winning the Palme d’Or, a first for a South Korean movie.

The Parasite was also the first South Korean film to be nominated for an Academy Award, with Bong winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, making it the first non-English film to win Best Picture. Bong was named to Metacritic’s list of the 25 finest film directors of the twenty-first century in 2017. Bong was named to Time’s annual list of the 100 Most Influential People and the Bloomberg 50 in 2020.
