How is the film The Sum of All Fears?

The Sum of All Fears is an espionage thriller film directed by Phil Alden Robinson in 2002, based on Tom Clancy’s novel of the same name from 1991. The film is a reboot that takes place in 2002 and is placed in the Jack Ryan film franchise.

In comparison to the previous films, The Hunt for Red October (1990), with Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan, and the sequels, Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), both starring Harrison Ford in the role, Ben Affleck portrays Jack Ryan as a younger character.

A Neo-Nazi from Austria wants to start a nuclear war between the US and Russia to build a fascist superstate in Europe. The world’s superpowers are driven to the verge of war as Neo-Nazi scientists construct a secret nuclear weapon that destroys Baltimore and a renegade Russian officer paid off by the Neo-Nazi attacks a US aircraft carrier.

The only person who knows the Baltimore bomb was a black market device, not a Russian one, is CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Affleck). With the clock ticking down, Ryan must find a means to avert nuclear disaster.

Jerry Goldsmith composed and orchestrated the film’s soundtrack. On May 31, 2002, it was released in theatres across the United States. Critics reacted to The Sum of All Fears in a variety of ways. With a worldwide theatrical run of $193.9 million compared to its $68 million production budget and corresponding marketing costs, it is considered a great commercial success.
