Michael Jai White, an American actor, director, and martial artist was born on November 10, 1964. In the 1997 movie Spawn, he played Al Simmons, the protagonist, and was the first African American to play a prominent comic book superhero in a major motion picture.
White’s first major starring role and breakout performance were as heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson in the 1995 HBO movie Tyson. Spawn is an American superhero movie based on the same-named Image Comics character. Michael Jai White plays the title role in this picture directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, which also stars John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Theresa Randle, D. B. Sweeney, and Nicol Williamson in his final film performance.
The genesis of the title character, a killed US Marine who is resurrected as the reluctant leader of Hell’s army, is told in this film. Spawn is one of the first movies to showcase an African-American actor in the lead role of a major comic-book superhero. On August 1, 1997, the picture was released in the United States. It garnered mostly unfavorable reviews and grossed $87.9 million globally against a $40–45 million production budget.
Despite his moral reservations about the nature of his profession, US Marine Corps Recon Lt. Colonel and CIA operative Al Simmons are tasked by his supervisor, Jason Wynn, to infiltrate a biological weapons complex in North Korea. Wynn had instructed his finest assassin, Jessica Priest, to kill him while he is on the mission, which Simmons is unaware of.
Wynn sets Simmons on fire before he dies, and the flames force the plant to explode. Simmons lands in Hell, where one of the rulers, Malebolgia, offers him a Faustian bargain: if Simmons becomes his immortal servant and commander of his army in Armageddon, he would be able to visit his fiancée, Wanda Blake. The offer is accepted, and Simmons returns to Earth.
