Laughlin was born to Margaret and Thomas Laughlin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He went to Washington High School, where he was embroiled in a sports dispute that made national headlines since Laughlin was forced to attend another school for a short time, rendering him unable to play football at his former school when he returned.

He had an interest in psychology and had studied it independently, although not being a professionally qualified psychologist. A 1975 People article on Laughlin indicated his deep interest in psychology and that he had a personal ‘dream secretary’ to whom he reported his dreams. They were jotted down so that they could be evaluated later.
