Which is the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie?

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is the first movie of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, directed by Gore Verbinski and released in 2003. The film is based on Walt Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disney theme parks and was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer.

The plot follows pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) as they attempt to rescue Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the cursed crew of the Black Pearl, led by Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), who has turned into zombie skeletons in the moonlight.

In 2001, Jay Wolpert authored a script, which Stuart Beattie reworked in early 2002. Around that time, producer Jerry Bruckheimer became involved in the project, and he had Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio work on the script, adding the plot device of a supernatural curse to the story to match the original theme park ride.

Filming took place in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and on sets built near Los Angeles, California, from October 2002 to March 2003. It was also remarkable for being the first Walt Disney Pictures film to receive a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. On June 28, 2003, the picture had its world debut at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Despite low predictions, the movie was a box office smash, collecting $654.3 million worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing picture of 2003.

In addition to Best Actor nods at the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, Depp earned the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. The Curse of the Black Pearl received four additional Academy Award and BAFTA nominations.
