3 Idiots is a 2009 Hindi-language Indian coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-authored by Abhijat Joshi, alongside screenwriting associate Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
The film stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in the eponymous role, and is mainly based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone. It marks their reunion three years after the 2006 film Rang De Basanti. The pivotal parts are played by Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya.
The film was inspired by the true story of Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer-turned-scientist. He is the founder of the Student Educational and Cultural Movement in Ladakh, which was founded by a group of students in 1988. This engineer and genius from Ladakh have built ‘ice stupas,’ or artificial glaciers, to solve the water crisis in the community where he lives. The entire institute is powered entirely by solar energy, with no fossil fuels used for cooking, lighting, or heating.
It was one of the few Indian films to be successful in East Asian markets at the time, such as China and Japan. It was the highest-grossing Indian film of all time at the time, and the highest-grossing Indian film of the 2000s, with a worldwide gross of Rupees 3.922 billion ($90 million).
3 Idiots was nominated for six Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, as well as three National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film. It earned the Grand Prize at the Videoyasan Awards in Japan.
