Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, also known as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge internationally, is a 2017 American swashbuckler fantasy film directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg and based on a story by Jeff Nathanson.
The movie is the sequel to On Stranger Tides (2011) and the fifth episode in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, and Kevin McNally feature in the film, which is directed by Kevin McNally.

According to the directors, the plot and tone of the movie were influenced by the first episode of the series, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). Terry Rossio wrote the basic draught for the movie, which began just before On Stranger Tides was released in early 2011. Depp was involved in Nathanson’s writing process in early 2013 when he was hired to develop a fresh script for the flick.
The picture was originally scheduled to be released in 2015, but owing to script and funding concerns, it was pushed back to 2016 and then to 2017. Principal photography began in February 2015 and finished in July 2015 in Australia, after the Australian government awarded Disney $20 million in tax breaks. On Metacritic, the movie earned ‘generally poor reviews,’ grossing $794 million worldwide on a production budget of $230–320 million.
