Starz is the flagship product of parent company Starz Inc. and is an American premium cable and satellite television network owned by Lions Gate Entertainment. Its programming comprises first-run original television programs and theatrically released films.
Starz operates six 24-hour linear multiplex channels, a traditional subscription video-on-demand service, and a namesake over-the-top streaming platform that serves as a TV Everywhere offering for Starz’s linear television subscribers and is sold directly to streaming-only consumers. It was founded in 1994 as a multiplex service of Encore.
Apple TV Channels and Amazon Video Channels, which offer VOD library content and live feeds of Starz’s linear television services, are also sold separately via traditional and over-the-top multichannel video programming distributors. The brand name is licensed by Bell Media for a companion channel of the Canadian-based company’s Crave premium service, while Starz’s programming has been licensed for usage by a number of channels and platforms around the world.
Starz, along with its sister networks Starz Encore and MoviePlex, is based in Santa Monica, California, with satellite offices in Englewood, Colorado, and a modest office on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Starz was available to about 28.517 million U.S. households with a multichannel television subscription as of September 2018.
