Russell Ira Crowe, an actor, filmmaker, musician, and singer, was born on April 7, 1964. He was born in New Zealand, lived in Australia for ten years as a child, and migrated there permanently at the age of 21. He rose to prominence as Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius in the epic historical film Gladiator (2000), for which he received an Academy Award, a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award, an Empire Award, and a London Film Critics Circle Award for Best Leading Actor, as well as ten other nominations in the same segment.
Peter Weir co-wrote, produced, and directed Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, a 2003 American epic historical war-drama movie set during the Napoleonic Wars. The plot and characters of the movie are based on three novels from author Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey–Maturin series, which encompasses 20 books about Jack Aubrey’s naval career. Russell Crowe plays Aubrey, a Royal Navy captain, and Paul Bettany plays the ship’s surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin.

The $150 million picture was a collaboration between 20th Century Fox, Miramax Films, Universal Pictures, and Samuel Goldwyn Films, and it was released on November 14, 2003.
