Bumblebee is an American movie based on the same-named Transformers character. It’s the sixth movie in the live-action Transformers franchise. It was originally planned as a spin-off and prequel, but it was eventually rebranded as a reboot of the franchise.
The picture stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, and Pamela Adlon and features Dylan O’Brien (as the main character), Angela Bassett, Justin Theroux, and Peter Cullen in voice roles. It is directed by Travis Knight and written by Christina Hodson.
It was Knight’s first live-action feature, as well as the first live-action Transformers movie not directed by Michael Bay, who instead serves as a producer on the project. On July 31, 2017, principal photography on the movie began in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.
Bumblebee had its global premiere in Berlin on December 3, 2018, and was released theatrically in the United States on December 21, 2018, collecting $468 million worldwide, making it the franchise’s lowest-grossing picture but still a box office triumph. Critics lauded the movie as the greatest of the Transformers franchise, complimenting the action sequences and Steinfeld’s acting, as well as the 1980s setting and sense of nostalgia. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the sequel, is set to hit theatres on June 9, 2023.
