NBCUniversal Media, LLC (previously NBC Universal, Inc. from 2004 to 2011) is a Comcast-owned American multinational media and entertainment conglomerate with headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
The media and entertainment industries are the primary focus of NBCUniversal. The corporation is called for its two most important divisions, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) – one of the Big Three television networks in the United States – and Universal Pictures, a prominent Hollywood film studio.
It also has a strong presence in broadcasting, with a portfolio of domestic and international properties such as USA Network, Syfy, Bravo, E!, Telemundo, Universal Kids, and Peacock. NBCUniversal is also the world’s third-largest amusement park operator through its Universal Parks & Resorts subsidiary.
NBCUniversal was founded on August 2, 2004, when General Electric’s NBC and Vivendi Universal’s film and television unit Vivendi Universal Entertainment merged, giving GE an 80 percent stake in the new firm and Vivendi a 20% stake.
By purchasing shares from GE in 2011, Comcast gained 51 percent of NBCUniversal and hence control of the newly restructured company, while GE bought out Vivendi. Comcast has owned the company since 2013 when it purchased GE’s ownership interest.
NBC Universal Television traces its current origins to a succession of NBC expansions. In the late 1980s, NBC embarked on a diversification strategy that included the launch of two NBC-owned cable networks, CNBC and America’s Talking. NBC also held a stake in several regional sports networks and cable channels, including American Movie Classics and Court TV (until 2007).
