‘To die will be an extremely big adventure,’ Peter says in the classic Peter Pan story, and the title is an ironic allusion to that. The film is set in 1947 and is based on Beryl Bainbridge’s Booker Prize-nominated novel of the same name from 1989.
When Georgina Cates, whose real name is Clare Woodgate, first auditioned for the film, she was turned down. She dyed her hair red, changed her identity, and recreated herself as a teen girl from Liverpool with no acting experience after being rejected the first time.
She was cast in the part for the second time. When Alan Rickman learned of her true age, he was said to be irritated. He ‘handled her extremely delicately, anticipating that she was sexually inexperienced and could be offended by the incident,’ according to Mike Newell.
The movie did poorly at the box office, collecting only $593,350 in the UK and $258,195 in the US. It made a total of $2 million worldwide. At the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, however, Georgina Cates was nominated for a London Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress of the Year, and Mike Newell was nominated for a Crystal Globe Award for Best Director.
