How do actors make themselves cry?

Every actor strives to master a lot of things in the acting field, some more difficult than others. Some performers struggle with memorizing lines, and many have tried desperately not to laugh out loud in a comedy scene only to be overpowered by laughter. One acting obstacle, though, is almost like the holy grail of acting prowess: tears on demand. But it can be done, and we’re here to show you how to cry on command.

There are two approaches to causing someone to cry on command. The ideal method is to cry out of true emotion, depending on craft and immersion in the situation to fully feel the character’s emotions and shed genuine tears. When emotion isn’t cutting it, it can be helpful to know how to cry on the spot using physical techniques. Here are a few basic acting techniques you can use to cry on cue if you’re coming up on a crying scene and aren’t feeling it:

1.      The Staring Method: Keeping away from blinking is one technique to reliably create tears. While it can be difficult to resist, most individuals will spontaneously cry after around 30 seconds if they don’t blink, which you can use in a scene. Tears should begin to form in 30 seconds, and no one will be able to see the difference.

2.      Hydrate: Many actors overlook the importance of hydration when trying to conjure up tears at the moment.

3.      Try everything but the tears: Even if your eyes are as dry as a dessert, it’s crucial to reproduce every single body response that someone would have while sobbing while in the situation. Make a crying face, change your breathing pattern to imitate a real crier’s uneven and heavy breathing, add whimpering noises… anything mechanical that a real crier would do.

4.      The Menthol Method: Here’s a technique that professional actors commonly use. Menthol tear sticks and menthol tear-producing sprays are devices meant to induce tears and are frequently used by actors in movies and television shows. Simply apply them under your eyes and the residue will release menthol fumes, which will make your eyes wet.

5.      Fully Immerse Yourself in the Character: The most usual way for an actor to cry in character is for him or her to become completely immersed in the character.
