Is the Split movie based on a true story?

As per the report, the main character of the film Split was inspired by the life of Billy Milligan, who made history as the first person in the United States of America to use his multiple personality disorder as a defense in court. Billy was first arrested in 1975 for armed robbery and rape, according to the site. He was, however, liberated in 1977.

Split, directed by M Night Shyamalan and released in 2016, is the second installment of M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable trilogy. The film’s plot centers around Kevin, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Jay, and Betty Buckley. Kevin kidnaps and imprisons three adolescent girls in an isolated underground facility while coping with 23 alter egos.
