What is the well-known movie theater near Lincoln Center?

The phrases “famous,” “renowned,” and “celebrated” appear frequently in articles about the Lincoln Plaza Cinema on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Another adjective may be required shortly: closed.

The art-house movie theatre, whose owners are credited with exposing Susan Sontag and Woody Allen to certain independent and international films, will close in January after the building’s owner declined to extend its lease.

Film at Lincoln Center, formerly known as the Film Society of Lincoln Center until 2019, is a New York City-based film society. The organization, which was founded in 1969 by three Lincoln Center executives—William F. May, Martin E. Segal, and Schuyler G. Chapin—focuses on American independent and international cinema, as well as recognizing and supporting new filmmakers. One of the eleven resident organizations at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Film at Lincoln Center has introduced several of the world’s most recognized directors to American audiences over the previous four decades, including François Truffaut, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Almodóvar, and Martin Scorsese.

Every year, the organization honors great stars and industry executives at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with its annual Gala Tribute. It also presents the annual New York Film Festival and is a co-presenter of the New Directors/New Films Festival (together with the Museum of Modern Art). Film Comment, a bi-monthly film journal, is also published by the organization.

The Centre stated on March 16, 2021, that they will reopen their theatres on April 16, 2021, after a 400-day halt owing to the COVID-19 pandemic’s restriction of social activities.
