Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston directed The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a 2018 American fantasy adventure movie based on a screenplay by Ashleigh Powell. It’s a retelling of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s short story ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,’ as well as Marius Petipa and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker, about a little girl who is given a locked egg by her departed mother and sets off in a magical country to collect the key.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms premiered in Los Angeles on October 29, 2018, and was released in the United States on November 2, 2018, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in RealD 3D and Dolby Cinema. Despite a production budget of $120–133 million, the picture grossed $174 million worldwide. It garnered unfavorable feedback, with complaints about the script and dancing routines.
