Which is the first Mission Impossible movie?

Tom Cruise produced and starred in Mission: Impossible, a 1996 American action spy thriller directed by Brian De Palma. It is the first part of the Mission: Impossible movie series, and it is a continuation of both the original television series of the same name and its revived sequel series. Ethan Hunt is on a mission to find ‘the mole,’ who has accused him of murdering the majority of his Impossible Missions Force (IMF) crew.

Before De Palma, Steven Zaillian, David Koepp, and Robert Towne were recruited on board, work on the script had already begun with filmmaker Sydney Pollack. De Palma developed multiple action sequences, but Koepp and Towne were uncomfortable with the story that led up to those events, therefore Mission: Impossible went into pre-production without a shooting script.

Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton of U2 made a dance remix of the original theme song, which went on to become a top ten success in the United States and six other countries, earning them a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The film was a box office hit, becoming the third highest-grossing picture of 1996, and received largely positive reviews from critics. Mission: Impossible film series was born as a result of its success.

The film opened in a then-record 3,012 theatres on May 22, 1996, becoming the first picture in the United States to do so. It also broke the record for a movie opening on Wednesday with US$11.8 million, topping the $11.7 million earned by Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991.
