Christopher McQuarrie wrote, produced, and directed Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a 2018 American action spy movie. It is the sixth episode in the Mission: Impossible movie franchise, and it is McQuarrie’s second after the 2015 film Rogue Nation, making him the franchise’s first director to direct more than one movie.
Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, and Alec Baldwin return from the previous movies, while Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett make their first appearances in the franchise. After an operation goes wrong, Ethan Hunt and his squad must seek for missing plutonium while being monitored by the Apostles.
Before the release of Rogue Nation in 2015, talks for a sixth Mission: Impossible movie began. The movie was confirmed in November 2015, with McQuarrie announcing his return as a writer, director, and producer alongside J. J. Abrams and Cruise, marking the pair’s sixth collaboration. Due to schedule difficulties with Avengers: Endgame, Jeremy Renner revealed that he will not be able to feature in the movie.
Filming was placed in Paris, London, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates from April 2017 to March 2018. Following Cruise’s injury in August 2017, production was put on hold for two months.
It earned $791 million worldwide, surpassing Ghost Protocol to become Cruise’s highest-grossing movie and the franchise’s highest-grossing movie. It was praised for its director, writing, cinematography, action sequences, stunts, musical score, and performances, and many critics regarded it as the best edition in the franchise.
Two untitled sequels, one of which is Mission: Impossible 7, are set to hit theatres in September 2022 and July 2023, respectively, and will be helmed by McQuarrie.
