Moondog (McConaughey) is a stoner poet who spends his time in and around the Florida Keys trying to write his new work in order to keep his daughter’s respect and his portion of his wife’s estate.
The Beach Bum had its international premiere on March 9, 2019, at South by Southwest, and was released theatrically in the United States on March 29, 2019, by Neon. Critics gave the picture mixed reviews, with some calling it ‘joyous’ and others labeling it an ‘epic goof,’ however McConaughey’s performance was praised almost universally. The picture failed to meet expectations at the box office, collecting only $4.6 million worldwide on a $5 million budget.
The film’s distribution rights were acquired by Neon in May 2017. On March 9, 2019, it made its global premiere at South by Southwest and was released theatrically on March 29, 2019.
