Amr Waked, an Egyptian actor and filmmaker. He is a well-known Egyptian superstar, has also starred opposite George Clooney in ‘Syriana,’ Kristin Scott Thomas in ‘Salmon Fishing in Yemen,’ and Scarlett Johansson in this summer’s sci-fi blockbuster ‘Lucy.’
His most recent project takes him back to Cairo, where he portrays a criminal fighting an organ trafficking network in ‘El Ott,’ or ‘The Cat.’ The film, which he also produced, had its world premiere this week at the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival. It’s his second time working with filmmaker Ibrahim al-Bat out on a film. ‘Winter of Discontent’ was the first, and it dealt with Egypt’s 2011 uprising.
Amr Waked, an Egyptian film, television, and stage actor was born on April 12, 1973. He is most recognized in Hollywood and internationally for his part in the 2005 film Syriana. In Salmon Fishing in Yemen, he plays a Yemeni Sheikh named Muhammad, in Luc Besson’s Lucy, he plays Pierre Del Rio, and in Geostorm, he plays Ray Dussette.
An Egyptian military court condemned Waked to eight years in prison in 2019 for distributing false news and disrespecting state institutions. As a result, he has no plans of returning to Egypt. Since October 2017, he has been residing in Spain.
