Four-time National Award Winner Kangana Ranaut is all set to take audiences back to one of the most turbulent periods in Indian history with her upcoming political drama ‘Emergency’. Not only does she portray the iconic figure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but she’s also directed the film, which delves into the Emergency period. In a candid interview, Kangana shared her deep connection with the story, likening Indira Gandhi’s life to a Shakespearean tragedy.
Kangana believes that Indira Gandhi’s story is not just about politics; it’s about the human experience of navigating immense power. “Her life was such a Shakespearean tragedy,” Kangana said. “It’s not for us to judge or evaluate. It is what it is. When people see the film, they’ll realize that it’s an honest take on the Emergency—what led to it and what ultimately came of it.”
Reflecting on her decision to tackle such a complex story, Kangana mentioned that the film goes beyond merely recounting historical events. Instead, it’s a deep dive into the nature of power and its far-reaching consequences. She referenced a poignant moment from a biography by cultural activist Pupul Jayakar, where Indira Gandhi’s guide, Jiddu Krishnamurti, advised her to end the Emergency.
Recently, Kangana also shared a new poster on Instagram, announcing the trailer release date for the film. The poster features her as Indira Gandhi, alongside a powerful cast, including Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Vishwak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi. The trailer is set to drop on 14th August 2024.
Emergency is co-produced by Kangana Ranaut and Renu Pitti under the banners of Manikarnika Films and distributed by Zee Studios. The film promises to be a gripping and intense portrayal of one of India’s darkest chapters, with a release date set for 6th September 2024.
