How is the movie The Box?

The Box is a 2009 American psychological thriller movie based on Richard Matheson’s 1970 short story ‘Button, Button,’ which was earlier turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone in the 1980s.

Richard Kelly wrote and directed the movie, which stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as a couple who receive a box from a mysterious man who offers them a million dollars if they press the button sealed within the dome on top of the box, but warns them that if they do, someone they don’t know will die.

Director Richard Kelly penned a script. Media Rights Capital supplied a budget of about $30 million for the project. ‘My objective is to make a picture that is very suspenseful and broadly commercial, but still maintaining my aesthetic sense,’ Kelly said of the project. Cameron Diaz, an actress, was cast in the starring role in June 2007.

Win Butler and Regine Chassagne of Canadian band Arcade Fire, as well as Owen Pallett, produced an original score for the film in December 2008. Butler, Chassagne, and Pallett advised Kelly on his judgments during the editing process. Butler, Chassagne, and Pallett intended to release the soundtrack when Arcade Fire’s third album was released in August 2010, however, it is still inaccessible as of 2021.

The picture earned $7,571,417 in its first weekend in 2,635 cinemas, with an average of $2,873 per theatre. It came in sixth place at the box office, trailing only Disney’s A Christmas Carol, The Men Who Stare at Goats, and The Fourth Kind. The picture grossed $15,051,977 in the United States and $32,924,206 elsewhere.
