Richard Hanley Jaeckel was an American film and television actor who was born on October 10, 1926. During his six-decade career, Jaeckel established himself as a well-known character actor. For his part in the 1971 version of Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Jack was born in Long Beach, New York, on October 10, 1926, to Richard Jaeckel and Millicent Hanley. His father worked in the family’s fur business, and his mother performed on stage. R. Hanley Jaeckel was his birth name, having only the initial rather than a first name. He went to private schools such as The Harvey School and others. His father ran a branch of the family business in Los Angeles, and the family lived in New York until 1934. He attended Hollywood High School and graduated with honors.
Jaeckel, a short, rugged man, portrayed a wide range of characters in films and television throughout his 50-year career. Jaeckel began his start in the industry as a mail boy at 20th Century Fox studios in Hollywood when he was seventeen years old. 8 Jaeckel was cast in the 1943 film Guadalcanal Diary after auditioning with a casting director; he earned the part and went on to have a long career in supporting roles.
In Tijuana, Mexico, Jaeckel married Antoinette Helen Marches on May 29, 1947. Barry and Richard were their two sons. Barry, his son, is a professional golfer who has competed on the PGA Tour and has won. Jaeckel died of cancer at the Motion Picture & Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, at the age of 70.
