Jason Robards, Barbara Harris, Martin Balsam, and Barry Gordon feature in A Thousand Clowns, a 1965 Hollywood comedy-drama film directed by Fred Coe. It depicts the story of an eccentric comedy writer who is obliged to conform to society to keep legal custody of his nephew. It is based on a 1962 play by Herb Gardner.

Jason Robards appeared in both the Broadway production and the film adaptation. Martin Balsam earned an Academy Award for his role in the film for Best Supporting Actor.

A Thousand Clowns opened in previews on April 4, 1962, officially on April 5, 1962, and ended on April 13, 1963, after 428 performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Broadway. Jason Robards, Jr. (Murray Burns), Sandy Dennis (Sandra Markowitz), Gene Saks (Leo Herman), Barry Gordon (Nick Burns), William Daniels (Albert Amundson), and Larry Haines were among the cast members (Arnold Burns). George Jenkins designed the sets and lighting, and Ruth Morley designed the costumes.

A Thousand Clowns returned to Broadway on July 4, 2001, in previews, officially on July 11, 2001, and closed on September 23, 2001, after 83 performances after a tour that included stops in Durham, Chicago, and Boston. Murray Burns was played by Tom Selleck, Sandra Markowitz was played by Barbara Garrick, Leo Herman was played by Mark Blum, Nick Burns was played by Nicolas King, Albert Amundson was played by Bradford Cover, and Arnold Burns was played by Robert LuPone.

The film’s soundtrack includes anything from simple drum cadences to Dixieland versions of ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever.’ Several times, the song’ ‘Yes Sir, That’s My Baby’ is played. The theme song ‘A Thousand Clowns’ was written by Judy Holliday. Because the film was released after her death on June 7, 1965, it was her final film credit.
