In this modern-day Western inspired by Philadelphia’s real-life Black horseriding culture, Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, and Jharrel Jerome feature. The plot centers on Idris and Caleb’s characters’ estranged father-son relationship, which both actors play successfully.
2. Get Up On:
In this musical biopic, Chadwick Boseman played music superstar James Brown, one of his many memorable roles. While showing him as a musical prodigy, the film does not sugarcoat any part of his life.
3. Moonlight:
Growing up in Miami, a young Black man struggles with his sexuality and identity. Chiron eventually confronts a critical element of his adolescent years and seeks answers. In 2017, the film won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
4. See You Yesterday:
Two Brooklyn teenagers work feverishly to make their idea — time-traveling backpacks — a reality. When C.J.’s brother is killed by a police officer, they attempt to resurrect him using their invention.
5. Roxanne Roxanne:
When Roxanne Shante was a teenager in Queens, New York, she was already a strong combat MC. The film highlights her life and hardships as she tries to achieve her goals while also helping her family.
