Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Delroy Lindo, Stanley Tucci, Tchéky Karyo, DJ Qualls, Bruce Greenwood, and Alfre Woodard star in Jon Amiel’s 2003 science fiction disaster film The Core. The film follows a team on a mission to drill to the Earth’s core and detonate a series of nuclear explosions to restart the Earth’s rotation.
The earth’s inner core has stopped rotating for unexplained causes, causing the planet’s electromagnetic field to rapidly deteriorate. Life around the world begins to shift radically almost immediately. 32 persons with pacemakers die abruptly in Boston, all within a 10-block radius. The Golden Gate Bridge falls in San Francisco, taking hundreds of people to their deaths. Pigeons lose their ability to navigate in London’s Trafalgar Square, swooping towards scared crowds, bashing into windshields, and causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles.
In Rome, an electrical superstorm turns the historic Roman Colosseum into ruins as thousands of tourists watch helplessly. Dr. Josh Keyes and a team of the world’s most gifted scientists are summoned by government and military authorities to journey below the earth’s core in a subterranean vehicle piloted by ‘Terranauts’ Major Rebecca ‘Beck’ Childs and Commander Robert Iverson. Their goal is to detonate a nuclear weapon that will revive the core and save the world from certain annihilation.
The Core featured scenes set at sea, starring the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), with the US Navy’s full backing. The initial concept for the shuttle landing sequence was for Endeavour to try a landing at Los Angeles International Airport and then come to rest on the local beaches. The crew was not permitted to film at LAX due to the events of September 11, 2001. As a result, the sequence was changed to have Endeavour landing in the LA River.
Paramount Pictures distributed the picture on March 28, 2003. With an $85 million production budget, it earned mixed reviews from reviewers and grossed $74 million worldwide.
