The movie was chosen as one of the top ten pictures of 1962 by the National Board of Review. It was nominated for a UN BAFTA award in 1964 and received the Silver Sail award for best feature picture at the 1962 Locarno International Film Festival.

For $250,000, the movie was shot in 15 days. In the movie, assistant producer Noel Black worked as an electrician while Francis Ford Coppola drove a truck. The Sanders brothers, who got their start in Hollywood as second unit directors on The Night of Hunter’s river sequences, shot the majority of the movie at night to cover their low budget.
