Prosenjit Chatterjee is an Indian film actor, producer, and television host who is best known for his work in Bengali and Hindi films. He made his acting debut as a youngster in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Chotto Jigyasa, for which he received the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association’s – Most Outstanding Work of the Year Award.
He made his debut as a lead actor in Duti Pata, which was critically and economically unsuccessful after a succession of films in which he performed as a kid actor. Amar Sangi, a hugely popular love drama directed by Sujit Guha, gave Prosenjit his breakout role alongside Vijeta Pandit in 1987. He made his Hindi film debut in Aandhiyan, directed by David Dhawan.
After then, he appeared in a number of commercial films until 2003, when he appeared in Chokher Bali. He received critical acclaim for his performances in Shob Charitro Kalponik as an immobile but emotionally expressive poet, Autograph as a famous Bengali actor, Moner Manush as a poet and folk singer, Jaatishwar as a Portuguese-origin Bengali folk poet and his reincarnation, Baishe Srabon as a disgraced police officer, and Shankhachil as a depressed father.
He returned to Bollywood in 2012 with Shanghai and, most recently, Traffic. Throughout his career, he has received various awards, including seven Best Actor Awards from the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association, four Kalakar Awards, and two Filmfare Awards East.
In 2016, he made his television debut in the non-fiction genre with Mahanayak, a 99-episode mini-series. The show, which was produced by Shree Venkatesh Films and directed by Birsa Dasgupta and starred Paoli Dam, Tanushree Chakraborty, and Priyanka Sarkar among others, was based on the life of a 1960s superstar and was filled with career highs and personal instability.
