How is the Film The House That Jack Built?

Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built is a 2018 horror film starring Matt Dillon, Bruno Ganz, Uma Thurman, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Sofie Grbl, Riley Keough, and Jeremy Davies. The House That Jack Built has a worldwide gross of 5,566,776 dollars.

Its plot follows Jack (Dillon), a serial killer who commits multiple killings in the United States state of Washington for 12 years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The film is organized as a sequence of flashback vignettes narrated by Jack to the Roman poet Virgil, during which Jack attempts to make a justification for his crimes, using Dante’s Inferno as a metatext.

The House That Jack Built began production in Sweden in 2016 after being envisaged as a television project by von Trier. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, marking von Trier’s first appearance there in almost six years. Critics had mixed feelings about the movie.
Von Trier had intended for the project to be a television series, but he revealed in February 2016 that it will instead be a film. Von Trier had a completed draught by May 2016 after a considerable investigation into serial killers.

TrustNordisk owns the international distribution rights to the picture, which is produced by von Trier’s Zentropa. The film was partially funded by Film I Väst, with production subsidies from the Copenhagen Film Fund totaling €1.08 million. France, Germany, Sweden, and Denmark collaborated on the project.

Principal photography began in March 2017 outside of Bengtsfors in Dalsland, Sweden, and included locations such as Copenhagen, Gribskov, Trollhättan, the Peak District, and Montemerano. Dillon’s character was influenced by American serial murderer Ted Bundy at first, but he quickly developed his personality. Von Trier separated the filming into two halves to allow for post-production editing, which he has done before. The film’s post-production took about a year and includes intricate special effects.
