Is the film The Happening a supernatural film?

M. Night Shyamalan wrote, directed, and produced The Happening, a supernatural thriller film released in 2008. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, and Betty Buckley and is about a mysterious environmental event that leads to mass suicides.

The film had its world debut on June 10, 2008, in New York City, and was released theatrically in the United States on June 13, 2008, by 20th Century Fox. Critics gave it mostly unfavorable reviews, and it grossed $163 million worldwide. The DVD sets sold have produced about US$22.4 million in income as of August 2020.

After the critical and commercial failure of M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water (2006), M. Night Shyamalan struggled to find a buyer for his new spec script, ‘The Green Effect.’ Several studios had acquired the screenplay by January 2007, but none had expressed significant interest to purchase it.

Filming was conducted on Walnut Street, at Rittenhouse Square Park, at Masterman High School, on South Smedley Street, and at the ‘G’ Lodge in Phoenixville, beginning in August 2007. The film score was recorded at the Sony Scoring Stage during post-production and composed by James Newton Howard, who was working with Shyamalan for the sixth time.

M. Night Shyamalan was nominated for four Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (also for Max Payne), Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. The film was also nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film but fell short to Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
