What is the story of the film Pihu?

Pihu is a 2018 Indian drama thriller movie written and directed by Vinod Kapri, with Ronnie Screwvala, Siddharth Roy Kapur, and Shilpa Jindal serving as co-producers. The film stars Pihu (Myra Vishwakarma), a two-year-old girl who is confined within her house with no way out. The film was shot in Greater Noida’s Gandharva community.

Pihu is a sweet two-year-old kid who wakes up the morning after her second birthday to find herself alone with her mother, who we soon discover is not sleeping. Her mother, Puja, took her own life in the middle of the night after an ostensibly violent quarrel with Pihu’s father. Gaurav, Pihu’s father, is gone on business and only appears in the film as a voice during phone calls.

Pihu follows the titular character as she spends a day alone at home, blissfully unaware of the numerous dangers she faces. Pihu inadvertently puts herself in danger many times while playing with her toys, watching television, playing with her mother’s lipstick, and playing with the leftover balloons from her birthday party.

Everyday threats are no longer monitored and averted by her parents, from the entire apartment having marbled flooring and stairs to the sink overflowing with water that is precariously close to electrical plugs and an iron that has been left on.

Pihu had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 2018 Indian International Film Festival and was also screened at the Fajr International Film Festival. On November 16, 2018, the film was released in theatres. At the 14th Trans-Saharan International Film Festival, Pihu took home the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film in the International Competition category, as well as the People’s Choice Award for Best Film.
