Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has expressed his concern over the growing backlash and censorship surrounding Phule, the upcoming biographical drama directed by Ananth Mahadevan. The film, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa as social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, has drawn criticism for allegedly promoting casteism.
Ahead of its scheduled release on April 25, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has instructed the makers to implement multiple edits. Several references to caste, including terms such as “Mahar,” “Mang,” “Peshvai,” and “Manu’s system of caste,” have reportedly been asked to be removed under the CBFC’s guidelines.
Kashyap, known for his candid opinions and support for artistic freedom, raised concerns on Instagram about the implications of such censorship on films rooted in historical and social realities.
