George T. Miller directed Zeus and Roxanne, a 1997 American family comedy-adventure film starring Steve Guttenberg, Kathleen Quinlan, and Miko Hughes. It centers around the camaraderie of the title characters, Zeus and Roxanne, who are both dogs and dolphins.
Zeus, a dog, goes to the pier one morning, observes a dolphin, and is mesmerized by its motions. Following that, he returns to his owner, Terry Barnett, an aspiring musician, and his son, Jordan, who looks to be looking after him.
Later that morning, Zeus chases a cat and ruins Mary Beth Dunhill’s outside garden, a marine researcher who lives next door to the Barnetts. Despite Mary Beth’s agitation, Terry calms Zeus down and apologizes to her.
Later, Mary Beth goes to work and is followed by Zeus, who discovers her earlier shot of the same dolphin. When she arrives, she is greeted by Becky, her study colleague, and Claude Carver, her competition.
He does, however, lose his footing in the midst of the water. Roxanne saves him from a shark and rides him back to the boat on her back, surprising and fascinating Mary Beth and Becky, who discover that Zeus and Roxanne can communicate between species. Mary Beth notices her two impossible kids, Judith and Nora, skating against her wishes while stopping with Zeus on the way home.
Meanwhile, Claude tries to take Mary Beth’s study grant money because he wants it for his research rather than Mary Beth’s, but is comically prevented by Zeus. Then he tries to take the lead in her interspecies communication study, despite his repeated failures to bond one of his research dolphins with another animal.
The propeller on Mary Beth’s submersible becomes tangled in the fishing nets as she is exploring the seabed, and when she opens the main door to escape, water floods the cabin. Terry is led to Mary Beth by Roxanne, and he is able to release her from the submersible. Jordan, Judith, and Nora then persuade him to marry her.
She receives a scholarship for her research on Zeus and Roxanne during the wedding. A pod of dolphins emerges shortly after, and Zeus persuades Roxanne to join them. As Roxanne flies into the air with the pod, Zeus watches joyously with Terry, Mary Beth, Jordan, Judith, and Nora.
