In which Hollywood movie hero was crucified?

Mel Gibson produced, directed, and co-wrote The Passion of the Christ, a 2004 Hollywood epic biblical drama film starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary, and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It largely follows the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in depicting Jesus’ Passion. It also draws on religious narratives like the Friday of Sorrows, as well as other devotional texts like Anne Catherine Emmerich’s alleged visions.

The movie focuses on the final 12 hours leading up to Jesus Christ’s death, known as the Passion, hence the title. It begins with the Agony in the Garden (of Gethsemane), continues with Judas Iscariot’s betrayal, the gruesome Scourging at the Pillar, Mary’s suffering as prophesied by Simeon, and Jesus’ crucifixion and death, and concludes with a brief picture of his rising.

The picture does, however, include flashbacks to specific episodes in Jesus’ life, some of which are historically based, such as The Last Supper and The Sermon on the Mount, and others that are based on the artistic license, such as when Mary comforts Jesus and when Jesus creates a table.

The majority of the movie was filmed in Italy. The discourse is fully in Hebrew, Latin, and Aramaic that has been reconstructed. Despite Gibson’s initial opposition, the film is subtitled.

At the end of its theatrical run, the picture had grossed over $612 million worldwide, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2004. It is the highest-grossing Christian film of all time (inflation-adjusted). At the 77th Academy Awards in 2005, it garnered three nominations for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
