It is based on the story of Brierley, who sets out to find his family 25 years after being separated from them in India. Australia and the United Kingdom collaborated on the movie.
The Weinstein Company gave the movie a restricted release in the United States on November 25, 2016, before releasing it widely on January 6, 2017. It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on October 10, 2016. It was released on January 19, 2017, in Australia and January 20, 2017, in the United Kingdom.
It was nominated for two BAFTAs: Best Supporting Actor (Patel) and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also a financial success, grossing $140 million worldwide, making it one of Australia’s highest-grossing movies of all time.
