While most directors are quick to jump on the remake bandwagon, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali isn’t one of them. In a candid byte, the storyteller behind some of Bollywood’s most memorable romances admitted he finds little excitement in redoing old films. “Achi film ban gayi hai toh ussi ko dekh lo,” he said, adding that today’s audience is far more open to subtitles and dubbing across languages, making remakes less relevant.
But if he had to choose, Imtiaz wouldn’t mind seeing new versions of two of his own: Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal 2. Why these two? “JHMS had so much that never came out. The film had potential that wasn’t fully tapped,” he confessed.
As for Love Aaj Kal 2, he believes splitting the plot into two separate parts—focused on modernity and emotional complexity—could truly bring out its essence if told with a fresh approach.
