On October 4, 2014, Inherent Vice premiered at the New York Film Festival, and on December 12, 2014, it began a limited theatrical distribution in the United States. The film was well-received by critics, who praised the actors, costumes, and narrative.
Despite the excellent reviews, the picture only made $8 million domestically and $6.6 million internationally, bringing its total gross to $14.6 million—roughly $6 million shy of its budget.
