Oriol Paulo wrote and directed The Invisible Guest, a 2016 Spanish mystery thriller film. On January 6, 2017, it was released in Spain. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was a commercial triumph, generating $30.7 million against a budget of €4 million. Three remakes of The Invisible Guest have been released in various languages.
Adrián Doria, a wealthy businessman named Man of the Year for his high-tech company and trade agreements with the Asian market, meets Virginia Goodman, a veteran lawyer who specializes in witness preparation and judicial declaration and was recommended by Adrián’s lawyer Felix Leiva to build a credible defense.
Arrested by police in a mountain hotel room with the body of his lover, photographer Laura Vidal, Adrián speaks with Virginia about the crime and his relationship with Laura, revealing that they both died in a car accident in which a man named Daniel Garrido died, and how Laura used Daniel’s death to get Adrián out of jail.
At the same time that Félix is looking for a clue that could alter the course of events, Virginia and Adrián continue to discuss the case, but Virginia, unconvinced by Adrián’s testimony, forces him to clear the dark spots in his past, in a puzzle where the truth and the lie are easily interchangeable.
In 2015, the movie was shot in Terrassa, a city in Catalonia, Spain, as well as other places in Spain, including Barcelona, the Biscay area, and Vall de Nuria. In Spain, the picture made US$3.9 million, and in China, it made CN172.4 million.
