‘The Dark Knight,’ Christopher Nolan‘s most commercially successful film to date, grossed about 535 million dollars in North America at the box office. The film was inspired by the Joker’s first appearance in a comic book in 1940, the 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, and the 1996 television series The Long Halloween, which recounted Harvey Dent’s story arc. The film received critical acclaim for its screenplay, visual effects, musical score, mature themes, performances (particularly Ledger’s), cinematography, action sequences, and direction, and was regarded as one of the best films of its decade and one of the greatest and most influential superhero films of all time.
