The movie Planet of the Apes, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and partially based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des Singes, is a 1968 American science fiction movie. Michael Wilson and Rod Serling collaborated on the script.
Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly, and Linda Harrison are among the cast members. An astronaut group crashes lands on an unknown planet in the far future in the film. The surviving crew members discover a society where apes have grown into animals with human-like intelligence and communication, despite the planet’s initial appearance of desolation. Humans have become mute beings wearing animal skins, and apes have taken over as the dominant species.
The picture was released in the United States on February 8, 1968, and was a commercial success, grossing $32.6 million in its lifetime in the United States. The film was praised by reviewers and moviegoers for its innovative prosthetic makeup techniques by artist John Chambers, and it spawned a film franchise that included four sequels, as well as a short-lived television show, animated series, comic books, and different merchandising. Tim Burton’s remake Planet of the Apes was released in 2001, and the reboot sequel began in 2011 with Rising of the Planet of the Apes.
