Woody Allen born on December 1, 1935, is an American film director, writer, actor, and comedian whose career spans more than six decades and includes multiple Academy Award-winning movies.
Manhattan is a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Woody Allen and produced by Charles H. Joffe that was released in 1979. Allen and Marshall Brickman collaborated on the screenplay. Allen co-stars as a 42-year-old twice-divorced comedy writer who dates a 17-year-old girl (Mariel Hemingway) but falls in love with his best friend’s mistress (Michael Murphy) (Diane Keaton). Anne Byrne and Meryl Streep also starred in the film.
Manhattan was Allen’s first black-and-white feature, and it was shot in a 2.35:1 widescreen format. It includes music by George Gershwin, notably the film’s inspiration, Rhapsody in Blue. The film was described by Allen as a cross between Annie Hall and Interiors. The film garnered positive reviews and was nominated for Academy Awards for Hemingway’s Best Supporting Actress and Allen and Brickman’s Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
It was Allen’s second-highest box-office hit in North America, grossing $39.9 million (adjusted for inflation). It ranks 46th on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Laughs list and 63rd on Bravo’s ‘100 Funniest Movies.’ It is widely regarded as one of his best pictures.
