The Purge is an American book series media franchise centered on a story arc of dystopian action horror movies written and directed by James DeMonaco, who was influenced by a Star Trek: The Original Series episode, ‘The Return of the Archons,’ and distributed by Universal Pictures and produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes.
Soon, the films depict a seemingly typical, crime-free America. But the truth is that the country is a dystopia that celebrates the Purge, a 12-hour time during which all crime, including murder, is allowed.
The Purge, directed by DeMonaco, who also directed two of the sequels and created the screenplays for all of the films in the series, kicked off the franchise in 2013. The Forever Purge, the fifth installment, was released on July 2, 2021. The franchise has also inspired a twenty-episode television series, which started on September 4, 2018, and ended on December 17, 2019; DeMonaco wrote the pilot episode.

The franchise has gotten mixed reviews from critics, with acclaim for the concept, acting, style, and action sequences, but criticism for the screenplay and clichéd plots. Despite a combined production budget of $53 million, the franchise has made over $450 million.
