Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is a 2017 American software superhero comedy movie made by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox, based on Dav Pilkey’s children’s novel series of the same name. Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Thomas Middleditch, and Nick Kroll feature in the film, which was directed by David Soren from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller. In the film, George Beard and Harold Hutchins hypnotize their cruel principal, Mr. Krupp, into believing he is the titular ‘Captain Underpants,’ a superhero who battles crime while wearing only underwear and a cape, believing he has superpowers.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie premiered at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on May 21, 2017, and was distributed in 3D and 2D versions in the United States on June 2, 2017. The animation, humor, faithfulness, and connections to the original material, and voice acting, particularly from Helms, garnered generally excellent reviews.

It made $125 million worldwide on a $38 million budget, making it the cheapest DreamWorks Animation feature film until Spirit Untamed was released in 2021 on a $30 million budget. The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, a Netflix television series, premiered on July 13, 2018, and aired for four seasons with 45 episodes and three specials.
