D. J. Caruso directed and F. Scott Frazier wrote the American action thriller film, XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Deepika Padukone starred in the film along with Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Kris Wu, Ruby Rose, Tony Jaa, Nina Dobrev, Toni Collette, Ariadna Gutiérrez, Hermione Corfield, Samuel L. Jackson, and others. It is the third entry in the XXX film series, as well as a sequel to XXX (2002) and XXX: State of the Union (2005).
The movie got mixed reviews from reviewers and grossed over $346 million worldwide on a production budget of $85 million, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise and Revolution Studios’ history. Following the release of XXX in 2002, director Rob Cohen announced his plans to develop the picture into a franchise, but one that would be ‘anarchistic,’ with distinct settings in each film and no characters from the first film returning except Vin Diesel as Xander Cage. Cohen had two scripts in development, one set in Southeast Asia and including Malacca strait pirates, and the other set in Washington, D.C. and involving the US Secret Service. He was working on a sequel and planning a third and fourth picture.
On February 2, 2016, principal photography began at Cinespace Film Studios’ Kipling Avenue location in Toronto, Ontario. In addition, it was shot on-site in Hamilton, Ontario. Filming took place in Pinewood Indomina Studios, the Dominican Republic, and the Philippines from May 20 to June 20, 2016.
