Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has opened its festival run on a high. The Tamil-language feature received a standing ovation after its world premiere in the Centrepiece section at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, marking the first Tamil film to premiere at TIFF in ten years and locking a confident countdown to its worldwide theatrical release on September 25.
The premiere unfolded at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre, with Subbaraj joined by leads Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth, and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. Videos from the night show the team taking the stage after the credits as the audience rose in applause — a warm first public stamp for a film built around friendship, prejudice and human connection.
Keerthy Suresh plays the title role, with Sananth and Rishikanth in pivotal parts. Dorothy is written and directed by Subbaraj and presented by Jio Studios with Sikhya Entertainment, produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain in association with Dhammam Films. Ilaiyaraaja scores the film — his 1,540th — and songs such as “Kalyana Virundhu” and “Muthumani” were already among YouTube India’s top trending music videos ahead of the festival bow.
Subbaraj framed the TIFF slot as a chance for a story rooted in a culture he knows intimately to travel without losing its voice. Jio Studios president Jyoti Deshpande called the premiere a proud moment for Tamil cinema, while Sikhya’s producers pointed to TIFF’s long place in their company’s journey and to Dorothy’s themes of identity and belonging.
Set against caste, violence and prejudice, Dorothy follows an enduring friendship pushed to its limits. After Toronto, the film moves to theatres worldwide on September 25, 2026 — a festival glow that Tamil cinema has waited a decade to claim again on this stage.
