Warner Bros. Pictures released Orphan in theatres in the United States on July 24, 2009. Critics commended the picture for its dark humor, shocks, and Fuhrman’s portrayal as Esther, but panned it for its formulaic storyline. Despite a $20 million budget, the film grossed $78 million worldwide.

Orphan was released on Blue-ray and DVD in the United States by Warner Home Video on October 27, 2009, and in the United Kingdom by Optimum Releasing on November 27, 2009. A public service message describes the issue of unwanted and unloved children in the United States and encourages domestic adoption in the first trailer. Orphan: First Kill, a prequel, is currently in development.
